Save the date June 11-12, Catholic Charities holds second collection

Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. has been helping those most in need since 1941, marking 75 years of service this year. The mission of Catholic Charities is to provide for the needs of the community through selfless service under the sign of love.

The weekend of June 11-12, parishes throughout the archdiocese will be asking the faithful to be generous in giving to a second collection for Catholic Charities; to enable it to continue to serve the hungry, the homeless, the desperate, and those needing help to face the struggles of daily life.

Although this annual collection was not on our regular schedule this year, it is of critical importance. Next year, in 2017, this collection will return to a May weekend timeframe. These donations we seek are a key source of funds and are vitally important to help Catholic Charities meet the operating costs of its many social service programs.

Impelled by the love and teaching of Jesus Christ, Catholic Charities offers life-giving programs, advocates for the voiceless and empowers the poor and vulnerable to foster a more just society. Catholic Charities serves people regardless of religion, age, race, ethnicity or economic status.

Through Catholic Charities professional support services and growing parish outreach efforts, people are assisted at every stage of life. Your support of this second collection for Catholic Charities stays in the archdiocese. It is through your support that we are able to fund these parish programs, as well as respond to new needs that present themselves. Thus, I encourage your generous response to this upcoming collection, which assists Catholic Charities and the parishes.

The Catholic Charities Parish Support Line is a service to parishes that gives pastors an additional resource to help individuals and families that turn to them in desperation. Because parishes and pastors oftentimes a play a significant role on a person’s or family’s support system, pastors become aware of the extenuating circumstances and unforeseen hardships encountered by their parishioners. Pastors or their designees can call the support line to speak to the Parish Support Line coordinator to find out what resources are available through Catholic Charities. The Parish Support Line coordinator will then put the pastor or their designee in direct contact with the appropriate person at Catholic Charities to assist in the situation at hand.

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, one major way that our archdiocesan Church manifests the face of mercy in this part of south Texas is through Catholic Charities. In all of its services and programs, Catholic Charities recognizes the dignity of each person encountered and demonstrates that we are all God’s children embraced by God’s mercy.

As you reflect on the many needs within the parish community, please prayerfully consider supporting Catholic Charities’ mission. A sacrificial gift of any size will be a gift of Christ’s love and mercy to those in need.
